Sausage Sizzler - Travel'n'Tornados |

G'day Sizzlers!
The Sausage font hunt has narrowed down a little more. We have
had some close matches, and an old Sausage graphic designer has
recently sent me what he believes to be "the" font. If he is
right, the one our search will be over... so that new T-shirts
and other stuff will be able to be produced! :)
The buzz hasn't hit yet, but I have to thank Runi from Moovitz for sending me a sample of his
caffienated candies. They are great! I have already consumed the
chocolate ones and I also have some coffee flavored ones to
devour (see the ads this week for a great offer).
The trip to Kentucky went well. It sure is a big deal graduating
from high school in the USA! I suppose it is also sort of a "send
off" to college/university as well.
There was one sobering event during our trip down to Kentucky.
We drove through Providence, KY, and although the tornado had hit
almost two weeks before, the devastation was still evident. Even
though we had seen similar scenes on television, nothing can
prepare your eyes for this. The tornado was so powerful that it
leveled homes and huge trees were ripped from the ground.
Apparently, it hit in the middle of the night... no one died...
even though Providence doesn't have warning sirens. After seeing
the damage to the landscape and buildings, I think this was a
miracle. I definitely will have a new appreciation for the
tornado sirens next time it goes off in Iowa.
Keep on sizzling!

Communication
So you have a Web site, but how do you allow visitors to
communicate with you?
Email, forms, and guest books are just some of the basics.
However you could get quite technical and complicated when
facilitating communication.
If you have ever taken note, Lockergnome uses a very simple
method to let visitors and readers contact them. It is a simple
e-mail link that invokes the default e-mail client on your
computer.
By using this link which has an e-mail address and subject for
the e-mail, that is to be created, you are able to set up filters
in your e-mail client and funnel particular e-mail to the
appropriate places. The great thing about using this method is
that it requires no additional features from your web host and
that absolutely anyone with an e-mail address can receive the e-
mail.
So this is how you do it:
link text
I told you it was simple! Next issue we will look at something
a little bit trickier, which will allow you to capture more specific
information.
Tip by Nathan Allan
This week I am going to do something a little different with
SuperToolz! It stems from the amazing amount of spam that I
receive. I don't know if it is because my e-mail address has been
in existence for so long (over 6 years) or if the spammers are
better and more persistent.
I have tried a few different programs, but for various reasons I
didn't like them. So please share with me what you use and why
you like it, please! I will share the best suggestions (after
trying them out) in an upcoming issue.
By the way, I use Outlook 2000 for my e-mail (but would consider
swapping if the perfect anti-spam client existed).
Make your suggestions in the forum or e-mail me.

In the past two weeks I have covered two topics that generated
many comments and handfuls of posts. With almost 700 total views
I take that as a good sign.
I would like to highlight these two topics this week, and with
good reason. The "Designed for Browsing" section of the
newsletter and the site will be taking a new turn in the next
week or two.
For now, please visit these two sections and read this weeks
"Designed For Browsing" to see what's going on!

PDAs - Making the move from Palm to PocketPC.
Last week I had an awful day. I was getting ready for a meeting
outside of the office. I was setting up some appointments and
saving a few notes. I then hit the "Hot Sync" button on my
cradle; it made its beepety-beeps and was under way. It finished
and I picked up noticing, however, some appointments had not
moved around. I tapped the screen to find it frozen. This has
happened a few times before, so I just reset and I am set. This
time, I reset and my Palm Pilot (an m505) didn't 'restart'. I
thought it was me so I reset again and this time I saw the Palm
logo, the time settings, but then it died and turned off. After
a few tries I gave up and left for my meetings with a schedule
burned in my head.
When I returned I called Palm and discovered I luckily had 3 days
left on my warranty. I set up and exchange and also learned it
came with a 90 day warranty. At that moment, I thought "hmmm..
Maybe I should sell this on eBay and get a PocketPC device".
Well, that's what I have done. (If you're looking for a new Palm
m505, let me know and I'll send you the link to my eBay auction
that expires Monday, May 27).
I found a great item and I am in love. I looked at the HP
Jornada and the Compaq iPaq. They are E X P E N S I V E ! !
I then learned about the Toshiba e570 that rivals the iPaq 3870
sans Bluetooth support. I subsequently learned about the
Audiovox Maestro, which is a rebadged e750, sans 32MB RAM. It
comes with 2 expansion slots and for under $50 I can have more
RAM than the iPAQ. If I need it, I can also buy a Bluetooth
module and still have spent less than the iPaq 3870 would cost
($649!!).
I purchased the Maestro with a coupon for $299 + tax. Incredible.
It has this tiny speaker that CRANKS out mp3s a full volume with
no distortion. Also, this device is hardly larger than the m505
it is replacing. It is far more versatile and it is an
environment I am highly familiar with. Then there is ActiveSync.
Make a change to your appointments in Outlook and within seconds
my PocketPC is updated. The only time I *need* to manually sync
is if I want the latest news from AvantGO.
I have come to realize that while Palm devices are nice but the
OS is truly terrible. I have a few friends that SWORE by Palm
and have since silently dumped their Palm Pilots and Handspring
Visors in favor of a PocketPC device.
Go Figure.

Change is a Good Thing
Last week I wrote about Web Site Navigation and the week before
that I wrote about and asked Design Methods. The editor and I
have been discussing some changes to this section and I would
very much enjoy getting reader feedback.
The idea is to set a list of criteria and review web site design
weekly. Each week a new site reviewed and comments made based on
a set list of criteria. In addition related topics may be pulled
out of the criteria and written about with relevance to the site
design reviewed.
The sticky part is what people find of value during a review.
Obviously things to consider include color usage, page layout,
navigation, general design, use of images and text, balances, and
so on. What I would like to know from you is what the "and so
on" part is, what details you value and look for. I have my own
list, but I am not writing to see my own words. Post a list of
what you find important and I will start compiling.
At the same time, think of what items you think would be
worthwhile to detail and / or pick apart. Each week the part
picked would alternate based on, perhaps, the part the sticks out
the most, be it good or bad.
The sites reviewed will be commercial sites as well as your
sites, if you like. My only comments are to be prepared for
harsh criticisms. Lets remember to keep this fun.
